Many people dive into lawn care, figuring it out as they go. However, learning the proper methods for lawn care tasks can give you a leg up, helping your lawn look its absolute best.

Keep reading to find answers to lawn care frequently asked questions.

When Should I Start Mowing?

This can vary from year to year, but mowing season generally starts in March or April. Wait until grass is around three to four inches tall, and temperatures have stayed over 40 degrees consistently for several days.

Good to Know: If you’re planning on hiring a pro, many lawn care companies start booking as early as January. To secure your spot on the schedule, request a quote ASAP.

How High Should I Mow the Grass?

The short answer is that it depends on what type of grass you have. Typically, thinner grass, like Kentucky Bluegrass, can be mowed a lot shorter than thicker grass, like Bermudagrass.

The goal is to cut the grass without scalping the yard, which is what happens when grass is cut so short that it damages the grass itself.

At Services By Bright, we cut grass to 3 or 3.5 inches for clients who have no preference. Some clients prefer 2.5 inches, but we typically do not recommend going this low. Other clients opt for grass as high as 4 inches.

When Should I Fertilize?

Fertilization is a great way to revitalize your yard, promoting thicker, more luscious grass. The most ideal time to do so is early fall. The second best time is late spring.

You can also double up and fertilize during both times of the year.

Good to Know: In addition to mowing, Services By Bright offers fertilization. To find out how much it would be to fertilize your yard, request a free quote.

Does My Lawn Need Overseeding?

If there are thin or even bare spots throughout your yard – or it looks brown – it may be time to freshen up your grass with some new grass seed.

Services By Bright offers overseeding if you’re interested in handing this task off to a pro.

How Can I Make My Grass Look Thicker?

As we mentioned above, fertilization and overseeding are two ways to thicken up your grass. In addition, mowing at the right height (i.e. not too low) can encourage thick grass.

Another lawn care task to promote thick, healthy grass is aeration. This allows air, water, and nutrients to reach the deepest roots of your grass. Services By Bright offers aeration for those who don’t want to take on this pesky task themselves.

How Do I Choose a Lawn Care Company?

If you want to let the pros worry about all of it while you sit back and relax, there are several things to consider when choosing a lawn care company.

This blog post gives a handy list to help you decide which companies to weed out until you find the perfect one.

How Much Does Lawn Care Cost?

The cost of professional lawn care depends on the size of your yard and how often you want it mowed. Most companies offer free quotes so you can find out how much your bill would be before choosing to work with them.

Good to Know: While many people think hiring a mower every other week instead of weekly is a good move to save money, it isn’t this simple. Often, homeowners who do this request that the grass be cut shorter than is healthy for the grass so that the cut will last the two-week stretch, leading to long-term decline of the grass. Moreover, many companies charge a bit more per cut for biweekly mowing, since they will be cutting taller grass each time.
